The 5 Most Common FAQs About Dental Veneers

If you’re thinking about getting veneers from Dr. Inessa Sosis at Golden Gate Dental, you may have a few questions about the process. As the leading provider of San Francisco veneers, we can address all of the questions you may have about dental veneers! We want you to feel informed about the treatment process, so here’s some answers to common questions about porcelain veneers:

veneers

1. How Long Do Veneers Last?

Porcelain veneers can easily last 10 years or longer without any chips or breaks. When they are properly cared for, it’s not unusual for your veneers to last even longer. This is one of the reasons that we recommend regular professional cleanings and oral exams with Dr. Sosis. If you have a healthy mouth and maintain your teeth properly, your veneers will last much longer.

2. Is Dental Bonding A Good Alternative To Veneers?

Dental bonding is sometimes chosen as an alternative to veneers, and it can be a good choice if you are on a low budget, and cannot afford veneers, which are often quite expensive.

Dental bonding is a good choice for more minor issues with your teeth, such as very minor chips and imperfections. However, dental veneers are usually a better choice for crooked, broken, dark, or gapped teeth.

In addition, dental bonding may not be a good choice if you clench or grind your teeth, as it is not as strong or durable as a porcelain veneer.

3. Do I Need To Take Any Special Care Precautions When I Wear Veneers?

As a rule, no. The only real precaution you should take is to avoid eating extremely hard foods such as ice, almonds, or other such food items with the front teeth. Veneers are durable, but they can be fractured by the high stress of biting a hard object with the front teeth.

It’s also a good idea to avoid chewing on non-food items like pens and fingernails, as this may wear down the veneers more quickly.

Beyond this, you should simply follow a healthy oral care regimen. Brush your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes, and floss daily. You should also wear a bite guard at night if you have a tendency to clench or grind your teeth.

4. Does It Hurt To Get Dental Veneers?

No! While the application of veneers requires the removal of a small layer of enamel, the entire process is non-invasive, and it will not hurt at all.

5. Are Veneers Covered By Dental Insurance?

No. Veneers are seen as a cosmetic treatment, and are not covered by insurance. However, in rare cases, an insurer may pay for a veneer if it’s replacing a broken veneer, or treating a tooth that has a crown or large filling, or another such problem.
