What Is It Like To Get Veneers?

It takes just two easy visits to Golden Gate Dental to bring out your most beautiful smile yet. At your initial consultation, we’ll take an impression of your upper and lower teeth and send the mold to an authorized laboratory along with photos and other records that ensure the very best case for you. Unlike regular veneers, there is typically no need to perform excessive drilling, shorts or unsightly acrylic temporaries.

On your next visit to the dentist (about two weeks later) your doctor will carefully polish and adjust your new ceramic veneers to ensure the best look and feel. The teeth are then moderately etched to prepare for placement, and then bonded one by one. Your doctor will carefully assess the placement of the veneers to minimize risks of chipping in the long-term.

That’s it! In only two easy and comfortable dental visits to Golden Gate Dental, you can have the beautiful natural looking smile you want!

Understanding

Porcelain Veneers And Cosmetic Crowns

While porcelain veneers and cosmetic crowns are both used to cover up imperfections in your teeth, the treatments have a few key differences. Depending on your dental health and the condition of your teeth, one or both of these treatments may be recommended to you.

Veneers are intended primarily as a cosmetic treatment. They require removing a small amount of enamel, though some types of veneers (Lumineers) do not require the removal of any enamel. Veneers fit over the front surfaces of your teeth to cover up issues like small gaps, crooked teeth, and discolorations. However, veneers are not intended to restore broken or damaged teeth.

In contrast, cosmetic crowns are intended to restore the aesthetics of your smile while also protecting your tooth from damage. First, your existing tooth is trimmed down to create a stable platform for the crown. Dental crowns are designed to fit around the remaining tooth structure, covering it up completely and protecting it from further damage and deterioration. Cosmetic crowns are usually recommended for teeth that are seriously damaged, misshapen, or decayed.

About

Caring For Your Veneers

It’s easy to forget you ever had veneers placed after your appointment, until you smile! We’ve had the fortune of seeing many patients experience better comfort and positivity in their smiles after cosmetic dental care with veneers. Just remember to keep your pearly whites strong and bright following these simple steps:

Maintain regular checkups with your dentist
Avoid using your teeth as “tools” such as to open containers
Reduce staining habits such as smoking or dyeing drinks
Keep up a healthy brushing and flossing regimen

Although your veneers are stain resistant, your teeth below the veneers are not! To keep your smile looking in tip-top shape, you may want to consider brushing without whitening toothpaste, which could produce an uneven appearance. You may also choose to reduce the acidic drinks you consume, or drink water shortly after drinking an acidic juice or treat.

Find Out

If You’re A Candidate

If you have a healthy smile, but you’re uncomfortable with the way it looks, this typically means that you would be a good candidate for porcelain veneers. Veneers can be used to treat almost any cosmetic issue, ranging from tooth stains to gaps in your smile, slightly-crooked and crowded teeth, misshapen and chipped teeth, and much more.

In addition, good candidates for veneers should be free of any major orthodontic issues. If you have serious orthodontic problems, you may need treatment with braces or Invisalign before you can get veneers.

Patients with untreated teeth grinding (bruxism) are also not ideal candidates for veneers, because grinding can crack and damage your veneers once they are placed. If you grind your teeth, make sure that to get a nightguard and address this issue before you get your veneers.

Finally, non-smokers are usually preferred candidates for veneers. While porcelain veneers do not stain, the bonding material and surrounding teeth can be stained by tobacco use, which will ruin your new smile. If you smoke, now is the perfect time to quit, to ensure that your teeth will look great after your treatment! To find out if you are a good candidate for veneers, schedule a consultation with Dr. Sosis at Golden Gate Dental.
